Hey, it’s 27 Sept 2016!!! Don’t know what this date means?? Let us tell you. Today, every internet user’s best friend is celebrating its 18th birthday. Yeah, today is our very own Google’s 18th birthday. Google now officially has entered adulthood. 😉
Every now and then Google is surprising us. May it be with its lovely Doodles or the amazing search tricks which you can perform with the little I’m Feeling Lucky button. Since its birth in 1998, amazing things have happened at Google. And many of us are just unaware of them. But as we use our beloved friend Google every now and then, we think everyone should know at least some things about it. And this is exactly what we are doing today. We are going to share with you some amazing facts about the most visited website on the world-wide-web.
1. Google Doesn’t Know Its Own Birthday
Yes, you read it right. Even though it never fails to remind us of others birthday, Google itself is confused about its own birthday. It is celebrating its birthday on 27 September since 2006. But in 2005, they celebrated it on 26 September. In 2004, they celebrated it on September 7 and in 2003 they did it on September 8. Crazy right..??
2. Google Rents Goats
They . We are not kidding. As part of its green initiative program, Google rents goats instead of lawn mowers to mow its lawns. Great going Google!!
3. It Could have Been BackRub
Originally when it was all set to be launched, the planned name for it was BackRub. Can you imagine calling it BackRub..!!!
4. It’s A Googol!!
The word Google itself is derived from Googol. Googol means a number which is, 1 followed by 100 zeroes. It represents the amount of information available at Google. Now that’s huge.
5. Google owns the variations.
Google nearly owns all the domains with misspellings of the word. The list includes www.gooogle.com,www.gogle.com and more.
6. The Very First Google Doodle
The first ever Google doodle, ‘The Burning Man’ was created on 30 August 1998. It was created when the two CEOs , Larry and Sergey went to the Burning Man Festival. It was added to let users know that they were not in the office and won’t be able to fix any technical issue if it happens.
7. Google was nearly sold.
The CEOs of Google wanted to sell the company for just $1 Million to Excite in 1999. But they refused the offer. Now Google is now worth more than $450 billion. If the deal had been done, the internet would not have been the same. Good for us, bad for Excite.
8. Google owns googlesucks.com too!!!
9. I’m Feeling Lucky
We see that button every day but don’t know what it is. The I’m Feeling Lucky was created to take the user directly to the first result of their search query. But you can’t use it anymore. Thanks to Google Instant, which starts searching as soon as you type and doesn’t give you any chance to click the button.
10. The First Tweet
When it joined Twitter, its first tweet was “I’m 01100110 01100101 01100101 01101100 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100000 01101100 01110101 01100011 01101011 01111001 00001010.” Didn’t understand? It’s the Binary of “I’m feeling lucky.”
11. It’s a Verb
the Merriam-Webster and Oxford English Dictionary added “google” as a verb to their lexicons in 2006.
12. Google too has A Parent!
Yes, it’s now is an adult. But it also has someone who looks after it. Since October 2, 2015, it is a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc.
13. Google is buying Everything
Since 2010-11, Google is on a buying spree. From 2010, it is buying a company per week on an average. Now that’s what you call a shopping.
